From Law to Code: My Journey to Education
A few years ago, my life looked very different. I spent three decades in the legal world, navigating the high-stakes realm of law firms. While the work was stimulating and rewarding, I yearned for something more – a chance to impact lives and foster intellectual growth directly. This longing ultimately led me to a thrilling career pivot that transformed me from a seasoned legal professional into an enthusiastic educator in the ever-evolving field of computer science.
My legal journey was impressive, marked by years of service at prestigious firms. I honed my skills in various roles. But despite the success, I felt a growing disconnect between my professional pursuits and my deepest passions. I craved an environment where I could nurture curiosity, guide learning, and witness the "aha!" moments that ignite a lifelong love for knowledge.
This yearning for transformation fueled my pursuit of education. I earned degrees and certificates in information technology. I also devoured coursework focused on professional development for educators, particularly in areas related to adult learning, instructional technology, and pedagogy. Each qualification chipped away at the wall, separating my former life from my desired future. With every step, I felt the excitement build; the promise of a fulfilling career in education beckoning me closer.
My transition wasn't always smooth. Adapting to new teaching methods, navigating the intricacies of the education system, and juggling certifications amidst family life brought its share of challenges. But the resilience I had built during my legal days kicked in. I approached each hurdle with the same tenacity and dedication I once brought to supporting attorneys with complex legal cases.
My perseverance paid off. I landed my first teaching role at a technical college, sharing my newfound knowledge with eager students. Witnessing their progress, excitement for technology, and burgeoning confidence in their abilities fueled my passion even further. Soon, I moved on to teaching computer science at the K-12 and university levels, shaping the minds of future programmers and innovators.
The journey hasn't stopped there. I'm actively involved in community initiatives like "Students That Code," empowering underprivileged youth with the tools and knowledge to thrive in the digital age. Every success story and the spark of interest I ignite in a student rekindle my joy and reinforce my belief that this pivot was the best decision I've ever made.
Looking back, the path from law to education may seem unconventional. But it was a voyage driven by a deep desire to make a difference.
